On October 23, 1891 (133 years ago), the “Shkolla e Vashave” (Girls’ School) opened in Korçë. In 1900, a dormitory was built, allowing students from all over the Korçë region to attend and learn the Albanian language.
The school was established as a response to the patriarchate of Istanbul, Ottoman authorities, and religious obscurantism. It was led by activists such as Gjerasim and Sevasti Qiriazi, Fanka Efthimi, Helidhona Falli, and Parashqevi Qiriazi. The curriculum included 18 subjects (social, scientific, and artistic), including Albanian reading and writing, grammar, and the history of Albania.
These students later became initiators of expanding schools throughout the Korçë area. The first school in Korçë was established in 1887, and the Qiriazi sisters, with the help of Naim Frashëri and American missionaries, opened the girls’ school, securing the necessary permissions.
