The elected President Donald Trump has announced plans to appoint Brooke Rollins as the head of the Department of Agriculture. Rollins currently leads the “America First Policy Institute.” In a statement, Trump emphasized that Rollins will lead efforts to protect American farmers, who he described as essential to the country.
If confirmed by the Senate, Rollins will oversee an agency with 100,000 employees and offices in every U.S. county, addressing a wide range of issues including food security, rural development, agricultural research, and trade. The agency’s budget for 2024 is $437.2 billion. Rollins’ position will directly influence policies related to food and the food spending of Americans. The Department of Agriculture is responsible for trade negotiations, dietary recommendations, meat product inspections, firefighting efforts, and supporting rural areas.
Trump described Rollins as a strong advocate for American farmers and food security, emphasizing her commitment to revitalizing small, agriculture-dependent towns. “America First Policy Institute” is a right-wing organization that has worked closely with Trump’s campaign to shape policies for his upcoming administration. Rollins also led the Domestic Policy Council during Trump’s first term.
In her new role, Rollins will lead negotiations for the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, which will take place next year.
