The Queen of Sweden passes away, the unique story of her life

Date:

The Queen of Sweden has passed away at the age of 87, the Swedish Royal Palace announced. “Princess Birgitta was the widow of Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern (1932–2016) and had lived abroad for many years. She leaves behind three children and their families,” the statement read.

Princess Birgitta was married to the German prince and art historian Johann Georg von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.

Born on January 19, 1937, at Haga Castle, she was the second eldest child of Crown Prince Gustav Adolf and Princess Sibylla.

Princess Birgitta grew up at Haga Castle alongside her four siblings: Princess Margaretha, Princess Désirée, Princess Christina, and Prince Carl Gustaf. The name Birgitta gained prominence during her youth when she was named a princess. The four sisters became popularly known as the “Haga Princesses” (Hagasessorna).

Unlike her sisters, Birgitta retained her royal title after marriage, as she wed someone of equal status.

Although Birgitta separated from her husband in 1990, the couple remained married. Johann relocated to Munich, while the princess lived in Spain. Johann passed away in Munich in 2016 at the age of 83.
