Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, who was fatally shot in Manhattan, was a prominent figure in American corporate leadership. Known for his academic excellence and athletic achievements during his youth, Thompson was highly regarded in his field.
At 50 years old, he lived in Minnesota and was visiting New York City to attend UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference at the time of his death. Thompson had been with the company since 2004 and was appointed CEO in 2021.
Before taking on the role of CEO, Thompson led the company’s government programs division, overseeing Medicare and retirement services. UnitedHealthcare is a key subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, the largest insurance company in the United States.
In May, Thompson became entangled in a lawsuit alleging fraud and illegal insider trading. The Hollywood Firefighters’ Pension Fund filed the lawsuit, accusing UnitedHealth executives of artificially inflating the company’s stock price by failing to disclose an antitrust investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.
The lawsuit claimed that Thompson was aware of the investigation as early as October 2023 and sold 31% of his company shares, making $15 million in profit, just 11 days before The Wall Street Journal published an article revealing the investigation. Following the report, UnitedHealth’s stock value dropped by 5%.
