Jude Law Found His Character’s Soul in ‘The Order’ Through Sickness and Authenticity

Date:

Jude Law, known for his transformative performances, credits a bout of illness for helping him unlock the essence of his character in the new movie ‘The Order.’ The 51-year-old actor plays Terry Husk, an FBI agent on a relentless mission to capture neo-Nazi bank robber Bob Mathews, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult.

In a recent interview with HELLO! Magazine, Law revealed how his physical state of being “sniffling, coughing, and haggard” became a defining element for his role. “I was adding to the DNA of the guy and, physically, I was waiting for a click,” he explained. That pivotal moment came when director Justin Kurzel noticed his disheveled appearance. “Justin saw something in me one day when I was sniffling and coughing. He was like, ‘OK, this is him. This is the guy!’”

Law embraced the opportunity to portray a “broken” character, describing how he intentionally let himself go during the project. “I wanted him to feel broken,” he shared. “I wanted you to worry that he wasn’t actually going to make it, that there was a sense of doubt.”

The movie, based on a true story, combines fact with fiction, as Jude’s character is an amalgamation of several real-life FBI agents. To nail the 1980s look, Law studied photographs of agents from that era. He remarked, “They all had a big old moustache, so it seemed apparent that the beard had to come off, and the ’tache had to stay. The challenge was making it a true ‘Ned Flanders’ moustache—authentic and not overly stylized.”

A Story Long Overdue

Law, whose production company Riff Raff Entertainment co-produced The Order, was surprised the story hadn’t been adapted before. “I was amazed that no one had done it before. It seemed like a very timely story for unfortunate reasons,” he said.

He hopes the film will spark conversations about the global issue of extremist ideologies. “History is littered with these kinds of people. It’s not just an American problem, it’s a global problem. Hopefully one day we can pull it out, roots and all,” Law expressed, highlighting the film’s universal relevance.

With Law’s commitment to authenticity and storytelling, The Order promises to deliver a powerful exploration of human behavior, resilience, and the ongoing fight against hate.
