The 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the mountainous region of Tibet early Tuesday morning has caused significant loss of life and several injuries. The death toll, reported by Chinese state media, has now risen to 95, with 130 people reported injured.
“A total of 95 people have been confirmed dead and another 130 injured as of 3:00 PM (07:00 GMT),” said the Chinese news agency Xinhua.
Additionally, over 1,000 houses have been damaged by the earthquake in Tibet, China.
There are three towns and 27 villages within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of the earthquake’s epicenter, which was located high on the remote Tibetan plateau near the Himalayan border with Nepal, about 50 miles north of Mount Everest.
The affected areas have a total population of approximately 6,900, according to Chinese state media. More than 1,000 homes are reported to have been damaged.
Reports indicate that the epicenter of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake is located in Tingri, a rural Chinese county known as the northern gateway to the Everest region.
Chinese air forces have launched rescue efforts and deployed drones to the affected area amid freezing conditions.
