Former President of Uruguay, José Mujica, announced on Thursday that esophageal cancer had spread to his liver and that he had chosen to forgo further treatment.
In what Mujica stated would be his final interview, he openly acknowledged that he was nearing the end of his life.
“Honestly, I am dying,” said the former leader, who governed the small South American nation of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015.
“What I ask is to be left in peace. Do not ask me for more interviews or anything else,” he said. “My cycle is over.”
Mujica expressed his wish to be buried in his garden, next to his dog.
“I will die here. Manuela is buried there. I am arranging the paperwork to be buried there too. That is all,” he added.
As Uruguay’s 40th president, Mujica transformed his country into one of Latin America’s healthiest and most socially liberal democracies, legalizing abortion, same-sex marriage, and marijuana for medical purposes.
He avoided living in the presidential palace, choosing instead to reside on a small farm and donate most of his salary to charity.
