The number of deaths from the fires has risen to 10, authorities say—double the figure reported just a few hours earlier.
Medical authorities in Los Angeles County say the victims’ bodies are still being examined for identification.
“Identification may take several weeks as the Medical Examiner’s Department is unable to respond to all death sites due to fire conditions and safety concerns,” they said in a statement Thursday evening.
The notification of the victims’ legal relatives is also underway, while meteorologists warn that strong winds could further fuel the flames.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna says it has not been safe to reach many heavily affected areas, and the death toll “will absolutely change.”
A man has been arrested on suspicion of starting the latest fire, which erupted on the border of Los Angeles and Ventura counties on Thursday.
