Compared to 2018, consumption has doubled. Sales of non-alcoholic beverages in 2023 increased by 20%, while alcoholic beverages accounted for only 8% of sales.
Additionally, the percentage of Americans aged 18 to 34 who drink alcohol dropped to 62%. Moreover, the current trend known as “zebra stripping” represents the replacement of alcoholic beverages with non-alcoholic ones.
Due to the growth in non-alcoholic beverage sales, many companies primarily involved in producing alcoholic beverages are now opting to develop and sell non-alcoholic alternatives. Diageo has decided to produce a new version of Captain Morgan Spice Gold rum without alcohol.
Likewise, Moet & Chandon has invested in French Bloom, a brand of non-alcoholic sparkling wines, according to The Economist.
For these companies, non-alcoholic beverages are more profitable than alcoholic ones due to lower prices and lighter taxes. This is why non-alcoholic beer accounts for 89% of sales, while wine and spirits make up only 7%.
Many companies are currently working on developing techniques for producing non-alcoholic wine and are striving to promote the sale of non-alcoholic beverages.
Additionally, celebrities like Blake Lively, Katy Perry, and Lewis Hamilton have launched beverage brands offering non-alcoholic drinks in recent years.
However, in 2023, global alcohol sales are expected to reach $1.8 trillion. Over the past 20 years, the overall percentage of Americans who drink alcohol has remained around 60%.
