Roland Trebicka (January 13, 1947, in Korçë – March 6, 2013, in Tirana) was an Albanian actor honored with the title of “Merited Artist.”
Roland Trebicka was born in Korçë on January 13, 1947. He completed his high school education at “Raqi Qirinxhi” in his hometown.
As a young man, he worked as an actor in the professional troupe of the SHQUP (Central House of the People’s Army), also known as the “Soldier’s Troupe.” During these years, this professional troupe was also home to other actors who later became famous in the field of stage and television comedy, such as Aleko Prodani, Koço Devole, Zef Deda, Sejfulla Myftari (Çekja), Mehdi Malja, Behar Mera, and others.
In 1971, he joined the National Theater (then known as the People’s Theater). He worked there until 1999. After a three-year stint with the company “Publimedia,” he returned to the National Theater.
Trebicka reached the peak of his popularity with the role of Jovan Bregu in the comedy Palace 176. His masterful performance in this role significantly contributed to the comedy breaking all previous viewership records. Even today, with 500 performances over seven years, numerous TV broadcasts, and tens of thousands of sold videocassettes, “Jovan Bregu” remains one of the most beloved characters on the Albanian stage. His catchphrases have long become part of contemporary folklore and slang.
Trebicka’s theatrical roles were numerous. Audiences fondly remember him as Xhenarino in The Great Magic, Zganareli in Don Giovanni, Hlestakov in The Government Inspector (The Inspector), and as the character in A Man with a Rose. In 2002, for his role as the Guard in The King is Dying, Trebicka was nominated for the “Best Supporting Actor” award at the International Festival of Experimental Theater in Cairo.
Roland Trebicka’s acting career began with the role of Kosta in the 1961 film Debatik. This early experience set the course for the young man from Korçë. He also appeared in several other films, notably A Dream for a Chair (as Vaska) and Concert in 1936 (as Nesti).
In 2011, Trebicka fell seriously ill with a lung disease, which forced him to stay away from the stage for about two years.
He was honored with the titles “Merited Artist” and “Honorary Citizen of Korçë.” He passed away from lung cancer on March 6, 2013.
