Albanian Men More Overweight Than Women
Albanian women appear to be more mindful of their weight compared to men. According to Eurostat, 62.3% of Albanian men over the age of 16 are classified as overweight, placing them among the highest in Europe. The countries with the highest rates of overweight men are Malta and Slovakia (69.4%), while the slimmest men are in France (51.5%).
In comparison, 50.9% of Albanian women are considered overweight, based on Eurostat data. The slimmest women in Europe are Italians (31.3%) and Montenegrins (34.6%). Meanwhile, the countries with the highest percentage of overweight women are Latvia (56.7%) and Turkey (55.2%).
Eurostat assesses obesity using the Body Mass Index (BMI), a widely accepted measure to classify individuals based on their body composition—muscle, fat, and bone mass—in relation to their height.
BMI categories include:
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 and less than 25
- Pre-obese: BMI between 25 and less than 30
- Obese: BMI equal to or greater than 30
Individuals with a BMI of 25 or higher are considered overweight, encompassing both the pre-obese and obese categories. For those aged 18 and above, a BMI of 30 or more qualifies as obese.
