Bashar al-Assad survives an assassination attempt? Russian media: He was poisoned in his apartment

Date:

An assassination attempt has reportedly been made against the ousted Syrian dictator, Bashar al-Assad. Since December 8 of last year, Assad has been under the protection of Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

According to the online account General SVR—allegedly operated by a former high-ranking Russian spy—59-year-old Assad fell seriously ill on Sunday. It is claimed that he sought medical help after suddenly starting to cough violently and struggle to breathe. The source suggests there is every reason to believe this was an attempted murder.

Reports indicate that Assad was treated in his Moscow apartment, and his condition stabilized by Monday. Medical tests reportedly revealed the presence of poison in his system. However, these claims have not been confirmed by Russian authorities, nor are there other cited sources.

Separately, it was reported last month that Assad’s wife, Asma, who was born in London, has been barred from returning to the UK after her passport expired. The 49-year-old, along with Assad and their family, currently resides in exile in Moscow.

The couple fled Syria after Assad’s regime fell, as rebels quickly advanced and dismantled his 20-year rule. Russian despot Vladimir Putin, a close family ally, provided them refuge in Russia.

Meanwhile, there are reports that Asma wishes to return to the UK and may even be contemplating divorce.
