British media: Albania among five spectacular destinations to visit in 2025

Date:

White sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and tropical temperatures – it’s no wonder the Maldives remain one of the world’s most desirable holiday destinations, writes Ellie Hutchings in an article for the British daily Metro.

However, paradise comes at a price, and in the case of this South Asian destination, costs are steep. A one-week stay in an overwater villa starts at £2,000 during peak season, which runs from December to April.

Moreover, recent increases in flight prices to the Maldives mean even economy-class travelers now face a £40 departure tax when leaving the island nation.

While the Maldives is on track to welcome a record two million tourists in 2024, the islands face growing threats from climate change. Rising sea levels could render them uninhabitable, meaning their breathtaking beaches may one day vanish beneath the Indian Ocean.

To protect ecosystems and save your budget, Metro recommends several stunning destinations that offer a similar experience to the Maldives—without the hefty price tag. From European shores to remote islands, these affordable getaways promise spectacular views without compromising beauty.

Albania

Dubbed the “Maldives of Europe,” Albania boasts white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters along its Riviera. This small Mediterranean nation is becoming increasingly popular among tourists flocking to its shores.

Luxury accommodations are surprisingly affordable compared to well-known European resorts. Beachfront apartments can be rented for as little as £20 per night, while a full meal with drinks costs around £15.

Flights to Albania are also highly economical, with Ryanair offering round-trip tickets to Tirana for just £30.

Thanks to TikTok videos showcasing its pristine waters and bright white sands, Albania provides a taste of the Maldivian lifestyle with a Mediterranean twist. Summer temperatures peak at a pleasant 30°C, making it a perfect holiday destination.

The Albanian Riviera is also home to excellent seafood and cultural landmarks, such as the historic village of Lin—considered the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Europe—and Gjirokastra, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain town.

For breathtaking sunsets over the Ionian Sea, visit Lëkurësi Castle near Saranda, where panoramic views of the town and coastline await.
