Dozens of residents from Gështenjas in Pogradec: We will not send our children to school!

Date:

Dozens of residents from the village of Gështenjas in Pogradec protested this morning, threatening not to send their children to school.

The reason for this is the relocation of the children’s education process from this village to the village of Rremënj due to the reconstruction of their current school.

Parents say the educational office has not arranged transportation for the children, who will have to walk nearly 1.8 kilometers, especially during winter, with classes scheduled to take place in the afternoon.

The parents claim that no solution has been provided by the authorities so far. They further state that they will not allow their children to attend school unless measures are taken to provide transportation.

Around 100 elementary and secondary school students are being relocated from Gështenjas school to Rremënj, and they either have to walk the distance or pay for their own transportation.

When contacted, officials from the Local Education Office stated that the law requires a minimum distance of 2 kilometers to provide transportation for children, despite the fact that this road is worn out, full of potholes, and muddy.
