A search and rescue operation is underway at the Singidi mine in the Balochistan province, where crews have been urgently dispatched from Quetta.
“12 workers were inside the mine when it collapsed after a powerful explosion, which is suspected to have occurred due to a methane leak,” said Abdul Ghani, an official with the regional authorities.
Accidents are frequent in Pakistan’s mines, where working conditions are described as extremely hazardous, and safety regulations are considered inadequate.
Last June, eleven people lost their lives due to a methane leak in a coal mine operated by the United Coal company in the Baluchistan province.
