A sad news for the medical field of our country: the renowned radiologist from Kolonja, Dr. Piro Dhono, passes away at the age of 83.
On January 5, 2025, Dr. Piro Paskal Dhono, a specialist in General Radiology, passed away in Windsor, Canada.
Dr. Piro was born in the village of Lëngëz in Kolonja in 1942. He completed his primary and secondary education in Lëngëz and the town of Ersekë. He then continued his studies at the Medical Technical School in Tirana, graduating in 1962.
From 1962 to 1967, he attended the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tirana, achieving outstanding results. These were the years when the new hospital in Ersekë was being built, where he was appointed and became the first doctor sent for specialization in General Radiology during 1967-1969. His specialization was guided with great care and dedication by Professor Petrit Selenica, who became a significant mentor in Dr. Piro’s professional, personal, and social life.
He worked with passion, dedication, love, and high humanitarian values at the Ersekë hospital, becoming part of a complete team of specialists during the 1970s and 1980s.
Dr. Piro served in this challenging but rewarding profession for nearly 42 years, conducting thousands of examinations before the radiology screen—a silent yet hazardous task that impacted his leukocytic system. In 1985, he was transferred to the Central Clinic of the city of Korçë, where he worked until his retirement.
Dr. Piro started his family at a young age with Mrs. Natasha Tole Adhami, the daughter of the renowned tenor of the “Lira” group and a beloved teacher of many generations at the “Petro Nini Luarasi” high school in Ersekë. Together, they raised and educated their two daughters, Klorinda and Stela.
After retirement, Dr. Piro joined his daughters and resided near them and his grandchildren in Windsor, Canada. He always carried a profound and unquenchable longing for his homeland, the places where he worked and sacrificed—Lëngëz, Kolonja, and Korçë.
We extend our condolences to his wife, daughters, relatives, friends, and colleagues. With his passing, Kolonja and all of Albania have lost a skilled, talented, dedicated, and deeply compassionate doctor.
