Numerous Russians are losing their lives on the battlefield, and a new study has shed light on the underlying causes. Will Moscow reconsider its military strategy?
Moscow – In the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, continues to face significant casualties. A recent analysis by military doctors has identified the primary reasons for the fatalities among Russian soldiers in contemporary warfare. This study indicates that nearly three-quarters of Russian military deaths can be attributed to similar factors. Just over four percent of these fatalities were due to thermal injuries, with the same percentage resulting from blunt force trauma. Other causes included stab wounds, suffocation, drowning, poisoning, and diseases like heart failure.
US Weapons and Russian Losses in Ukraine – Over 1,000 Soldiers Lost Daily
While the study does not explicitly address losses in the Ukraine conflict, it does reference injuries resulting from M30A1 rockets launched by the Ukrainian armed forces, using the HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) supplied by the United States. The report’s authors note that these weapons are among those contributing to increased mortality rates, as they can cause complex injuries affecting multiple organs. Current estimates from the Ukrainian General Staff reveal the scale of Russian losses, which, as of October 18, have reached around 675,800 dead or wounded since the war began on February 24, 2022. Other assessments also suggest significant casualties, with the British Ministry of Defence reporting an average of 1,271 daily casualties in September amid intense fighting across various fronts.
Putin’s Ruthless Strategy in Ukraine – High Losses Show No Signs of Abating
A senior US defense official believes that the rising casualty figures are disproportionate to Moscow’s territorial advancements. “The total Russian losses, both dead and injured, have surpassed the cumulative Soviet losses in all conflicts since World War II within just the first year of this war,” the official stated to a Ukrainian portal last week. He suggests that these escalating losses on the battlefield could hinder the Russian military’s recruitment efforts and pressure the Kremlin to initiate another wave of mobilization.
