Norwegian skier Fredrik Moeller stunned the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup circuit with a sensational victory in the Bormio Super G on Sunday, December 29. Competing in only his 26th World Cup race, the 24-year-old clocked a time of 1:29.22, securing his maiden podium finish and marking his rise as a contender on the world stage.
A Breakthrough Performance
Starting in the top group of 15 athletes for the first time, Moeller’s aggressive and precise skiing set a time that no competitor could surpass. Austria’s Vincent Kriechmayr finished just 0.20 seconds behind, while Switzerland’s Alexis Monney claimed third, adding to his downhill victory on Saturday.
Pre-race favorite Marco Odermatt of Switzerland finished fifth, a surprising result for the dominant force in this season’s Super G standings. Odermatt’s compatriot Stefan Rogentin narrowly edged him out for fourth place.
Reflecting on his win, Moeller told Eurosport, “I hoped today was going to feel a bit smoother down there, but it did not! I always just try to ski the way I know I can, and it paid off today. I had two good Super G races before this, so I knew my speed was there. But to come out with a win, I didn’t expect that.”
A Season of Rising Stars and Dramatic Moments
Moeller’s breakthrough follows strong performances in Beaver Creek and Val Gardena, where he finished fourth in both Super G races. His win at Bormio places him just 10 points behind Odermatt in the Super G season standings, injecting excitement into the competition as the season progresses.
The Italian resort, which will host events during the 2026 Winter Olympics, has proven to be both thrilling and treacherous. Earlier in the day, Switzerland’s Gino Caviezel suffered a serious crash at the San Pietro jump, necessitating an airlift to the hospital. The incident, following Cyprien Sarrazin’s brain injury during training on Friday, underscores the inherent risks of the sport.
Season Standings Update
Despite finishing off the podium, Marco Odermatt remains atop the Super G standings and has extended his overall World Cup lead to 161 points. Fredrik Moeller’s recent performances have solidified his position as a close second in the Super G rankings, setting the stage for an exciting battle in the coming weeks.
Henrik Kristoffersen will look to close the overall points gap in the Madonna di Campiglio slalom on January 8, while Odermatt returns to action at the St. Anton downhill three days later.
Looking Ahead
Fredrik Moeller’s triumph in Bormio marks a new chapter in his career and signals the emergence of a serious competitor for the Super G title. With momentum on his side and a season of high-stakes races ahead, Moeller’s ascent promises to keep fans on edge as the World Cup season continues.
