Faithful companions and lifelong friends, pets in Milan can now rest alongside their owners in a gesture of profound humanity, according to TGCOM24.
The Municipality of Milan has approved the burial of pet ashes—not just dogs and cats, but also birds, fish, turtles, rabbits, and rodents—within the graves of their deceased owners. This decision follows a 2022 regional law and is detailed in a resolution outlining the specific rules for interring family pets.
This fulfills the wish of many pet owners who want to rest eternally alongside their four-legged friends, even in a bustling city like Milan. However, strict regulations must be observed. While a photo of the pet or inscriptions directly referencing them are not allowed on the grave or tombstone, a shared photo of the deceased with their pet is permitted.
The law mandates that a pet’s ashes can only be buried simultaneously with or after the burial of its owner. Should the grave be relocated, the pet’s ashes must be moved as well. If the new location cannot accommodate both, the ashes of the pet must be collected by the owner’s relatives.
“This initiative reflects great attention and sensitivity,” noted Gaia Romani, the city councilor responsible for civil services. “It acknowledges the profound bond many people share with their pets and offers comfort to those who wish to ensure their beloved animals are treated with dignity, even after death.”
