Israeli airstrikes in Gaza Strip, at least 54 killed

Date:

At least 54 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Thursday, including three children and two senior Hamas police officers, according to Palestinian health officials.

Israeli forces targeted the Muwasi area, designated as a humanitarian zone by Israel, where hundreds of thousands of displaced people are sheltering in tents amid cold and rainy winter conditions. This strike killed at least 11 people, including women and three children.

In separate attacks in central and northern Gaza, at least 43 Palestinians lost their lives. Victims in one of the central Gaza attacks included members of local committees assisting with the coordination of aid convoys, according to staff at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where the bodies were taken. A journalist from the Associated Press, present at the hospital, confirmed the casualty count.

The Israeli military provided no immediate comment on Thursday’s strikes. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 45,000 people have been killed in Israeli air and ground assaults since the conflict began in October 2023. Over half of the casualties are women and children. The health officials in Gaza do not distinguish between civilians and Hamas militants in their casualty reports.

The conflict began following a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which left 1,200 people dead, mostly civilians, and resulted in 250 individuals being taken hostage. Of the hostages, 100 remain in Gaza, and a third are believed to have died.
