Thousands of citizens rose up on February 20, 1991, to bring down the symbol of communism, just months after the old regime—living its final days—had allowed political pluralism.

The fall of Hoxha’s monument was spurred by a hunger strike undertaken by hundreds of students demanding the removal of his name from the university.

February 20 has been designated as the National Day of Remembrance for the Martyrs and Victims of the Communist Regime.

In reality, it also marked the end of dictatorship in Albania.

The images of those events in Skanderbeg Square spread worldwide, once again placing Albania at the center of international developments.

The toppling of dictator Enver Hoxha’s monument symbolized the break from the past and the beginning of a new era—the era of democracy.
