International Mother Language Day, declared by UNESCO, is celebrated on February 21st each year.
The purpose of this day is to promote and raise awareness about linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as to encourage multilingualism. One of UNESCO’s documents (from 1970) states: “The mother tongue marks the path of human existence, and through it, a person enters society, creates the culture of the group to which they belong, and lays the foundation for the development of intellectual abilities.”
Today, around 8,324 languages are recognized, many of which are at risk of extinction due to globalization and social changes.
Ensuring that educational systems support the right to learn in the mother tongue is crucial for improving learning outcomes, as students who are taught in a language they fully understand demonstrate better comprehension, engagement, and critical thinking skills.
Every two weeks, a language disappears, taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage.
UNESCO estimates that only a few hundred languages have truly been integrated into educational systems and the public domain, and fewer than one hundred are used in the digital world.
