This morning, at the age of 88, the great writer Ismail Kadare passed away.
Ismail Kadare was born on January 28, 1936.
He was a former member of the People's Assembly (1970-’82), Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Front, and one of the greatest contemporary writers. Although he was primarily known for his prose, his contributions also extended to drama, poetry, and translations.
His works have been translated into about 45 different languages, making him the main representative of Albanian literature worldwide. Kadare was several times a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
In 1996, Kadare became a permanent member of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences in France and was honored with many international awards.
In recent years, he divided his time between France and Albania.
