An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale struck the southeastern coast of Japan’s Kyushu island, with tremors felt in several areas, including Osaka. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake was recorded at 9:19 PM local time, with the epicenter located at a depth of 30 kilometers underwater.
The strong tremors that followed were felt across the entire Kyushu island, Shikoku island, and a large area extending from Hiroshima to Osaka.
According to USGS PAGER, an estimated 1,022,000 people experienced strong shaking, 2,917,000 moderate shaking, and 7,217,000 light tremors.
At the same time, a tsunami warning for waves up to one meter high was issued for the eastern coast of Kyushu island and the southern coast of Shikoku island.
A prior warning for tidal waves up to 20 cm had been issued for the Amami, Tokara, Tanegashima, Yakushima islands, and some areas of Honshu.
According to foreign media, there have been no reports of casualties or damage so far.
Local media indicate that the population in this region generally resides in earthquake-resistant structures, although some buildings may sustain damage. The most vulnerable types of structures are wooden buildings and reinforced/restricted masonry constructions.
Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides and rockfalls, which could pose risks to life.
