South Korea’s Defense Minister, Kim Jong-hyun, issued an apology today and offered his resignation following President Yoon Seok-gil’s attempt to impose martial law.
“I deeply regret and take full responsibility for the confusion and anxiety caused among the public by the martial law declaration. I have submitted my resignation to the president,” Kim stated in a formal announcement.
Life resumed as usual for residents after South Korean President Yun Su-yeol suspended the martial law he had declared, effectively ending his effort to suppress political activities and enforce media censorship.
However, many residents of Seoul remain in shock after recent events, which triggered a sharp decline in South Korea’s stock market as well as its national currency.
South Korea has experienced martial law about ten times since the establishment of the Republic of Korea in 1948. The last instance, however, was over four decades ago when General Chun Doo-hwan seized power, ruling the country from 1980 to 1988.
President Yun declared martial law during a live televised address at around 10:30 PM (local time) on Tuesday. He later suspended his decision after the parliament rejected his proposal to halt all political activities and enforce strict media censorship.
