The warning from the American surgeon about the risks of alcohol could lead to a new trend in alcohol bottle labels.
“Alcoholic drinks should carry a warning about cancer risks on their labels,” said the U.S. Surgeon General on Friday, in a move that could signify a shift toward stricter regulations, similar to those for tobacco.
U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy stated that alcohol consumption increases the risk of at least seven types of cancer, including breast, colon, and liver cancer, but most American consumers are unaware of this.
Alcohol consumption is the third most significant preventable cause of cancer in the United States, after smoking and obesity.
Murthy also called for a review of alcohol consumption guidelines so that people can better weigh the cancer risk when deciding whether or not to drink, and how much. U.S. dietary guidelines currently recommend up to two drinks per day for men and one drink or less per day for women.
Alcohol producers and industry associations did not comment on the proposal, and it remains unclear whether the surgeon general’s suggestions will be adopted by the Joe Biden administration, which is in its final two weeks.
