Italian Man Hospitalized After Dental Procedure in Tirana: A Mother’s Ordeal
Simone Del Vecchio, a young Italian man, has been hospitalized for the past eight months after undergoing a dental procedure in Tirana, Albania, where 20 of his teeth were removed in a single session. His mother, Anna, has shared the harrowing details of how she found her son unconscious on the clinic floor after he suffered cardiac arrest.
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Anna recounted that Simone entered a clinic in Albania on March 13, 2023, for dental surgery and has been hospitalized ever since. According to her, Simone now has an extremely weakened immune system and has lost 30 kilograms due to the ordeal. “He is no longer the same person; he’s just skin and bones,” she said.
A Decision to Save Costs
Simone traveled to Albania with his mother to replace all his teeth in both arches, attracted by a 50% cost reduction compared to the same procedure in Italy. Anna had previously undergone a similar operation in Albania and was initially skeptical of her son’s decision, having witnessed post-treatment complications in other patients. Despite her concerns, Simone was determined to proceed.
Anna described their experience leading up to the surgery. “The night before, we ate pizza because no one told us he needed an empty stomach for the procedure. We paid half the fee upfront—5,000 euros—and waited while he went into the operating room,” she recalled.
Post-Surgery Crisis
Anna said that tensions among the medical staff were noticeable during the procedure, with one doctor angrily discarding his gloves. When Simone emerged from surgery, he was in severe pain but tried to rest in the clinic. However, as he attempted to fetch water, he collapsed and suffered cardiac arrest.
When Simone was revived, the clinic staff allegedly suggested he had preexisting heart issues—a claim his mother refutes. “He was always healthy. Just the day before, he had climbed eleven flights of stairs carrying shopping bags,” she said.
Following the incident, Simone was placed in a medically induced coma until May 1. He is now at Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo, Foggia, awaiting surgery for a tracheal stenosis.
A Mother’s Struggle
Anna has rented a room near the hospital for 500 euros a month to care for her son full-time. Doctors suspect Simone is experiencing epileptic or neurovegetative crises but are still working to determine the appropriate treatment.
The ordeal has left the family emotionally and financially strained, as they seek answers and a path to recovery for Simone.
