The FBI on last night’s incident in New Orleans: an act of terrorism

Date:

The New Year began with a tragic incident in the French Quarter of New Orleans, where 10 people lost their lives, city officials reported early Wednesday morning. A vehicle plowed into a large crowd on Canal and Bourbon Streets, leaving 10 dead and 30 injured, according to local authorities.

The 30 injured individuals were transported to hospitals across different areas. Most of the victims appeared to be local residents rather than visitors, stated Anne Kirkpatrick, head of the New Orleans Police Department.

The suspect responsible for the attack in New Orleans is deceased, a federal law enforcement official confirmed to CNN.

Investigators are confident that the driver intentionally targeted the crowd, said Kirkpatrick. The suspect was driving at a very high speed and fired at New Orleans police officers, injuring two officers who are now in stable condition, she added.

The FBI and local police are examining the vehicle to determine the motive behind the attack.

At the time of the incident, around 3:15 a.m. local time, many people were celebrating New Year’s Eve on Bourbon Street, renowned for its vibrant nightlife. Crowds had gathered for an outdoor concert and the New Year’s countdown, with restaurants offering special deals and performances, according to the city’s official website.

Police had increased security ahead of the celebrations. As the investigation continues, federal law enforcement agents are inspecting the scene for potential improvised explosives.

The FBI is investigating the deadly incident in New Orleans as an “act of terrorism,” the bureau stated in a press release.
