In 2024, people aren’t just swiping left or right on dating apps; some are creating “perfect AI girlfriends” and entering relationships with chatbots.
Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, has expressed concern about young people forming romantic connections with AI. He believes these AI-driven relationships could actually deepen feelings of loneliness, according to international media reports cited by Telegrafi.
Schmidt warned that an AI-designed partner, both emotionally and physically “perfect,” could lead to scenarios where young men become obsessed, allowing AI to influence their thoughts.
“This kind of obsession is possible,” Schmidt stated, “especially for individuals who are not yet fully mature.”
Young people aren’t the only ones engaging in AI-driven relationships. The CEO of the AI companion app Replika revealed that most of its users are over 35 years old.
However, Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, believes that young people are particularly vulnerable. He expressed concern about the impact of such technology on the human psyche, especially when users are isolated and exposed to computer-generated information that may not align with human values. This issue is one Schmidt explored in his latest book.
Schmidt emphasized that parents need to take a more active role, although their ability to monitor their children’s activities is inherently limited.
He also pointed out that despite age restrictions on online platforms, current measures are insufficient to prevent teenagers from accessing harmful content.
