Former “Harry Potter” star Rupert Grint has been ordered to pay 1.8 million euros in taxes after losing a legal battle with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

According to international media, Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the films, was initially told to pay the amount in 2019 after an HMRC investigation challenged one of his tax filings.

His lawyers argued on appeal that funds he received from a company managing his business should have been taxed as a capital asset, which carries a lower tax rate. However, HMRC maintained that the payment should be classified as income, subject to a higher tax rate.

The court ultimately sided with HMRC, rejecting Grint’s argument.

The case relates to the 2011-2012 tax year, during which Grint received £4.5 million from a company he solely owned. The payment was described as stemming from “remaining income and potential bonuses” generated by the “Harry Potter” films.

Rupert Grint argued that he should be allowed to pay capital gains tax at a rate of 10%, instead of income tax and national insurance contributions, which could reach a maximum rate of 52%.

However, Judge Harriet Morgan dismissed Grint’s appeal, ruling that the funds “derive almost entirely from Mr. Grint’s activities,” which would otherwise be classified as income.

This marks the second legal defeat for Grint, who previously lost a separate case in 2019 involving a £1 million tax refund.

Grint, best known for his role as Ron Weasley in all eight “Harry Potter” films from 2001 to 2011, has since appeared in movies such as Into the White and Knock at the Cabin. He has also taken on roles in television and theater, including starring in the Apple TV series Servant for the past four years.
