For months, predictions have been made about a major earthquake in Turkey, particularly in areas such as Istanbul and the Sea of Marmara.
Today, another earthquake shook Antalya, prompting reactions from experts.
Seismologist Dr. Süleyman Pampal assessed the 4.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Antalya, stating that “there are larger earthquakes in this area and traces of tsunamis at the crossroads of the Aegean and the Mediterranean.” The earthquake occurred at around 4:51 PM, with a focal depth of 7 kilometers.
The event caused short-term panic among residents, who turned their attention to expert explanations. Speaking to CNN Turk, Dr. Pampal noted, “Since the 3rd century AD, there have been 8 earthquakes with a magnitude of 8.5 in this region. This is the point of plate collisions.”
He warned, emphasizing that “earthquakes are normal. There are larger earthquakes in this area and traces of tsunamis where the Aegean and Mediterranean meet. Stronger earthquakes are expected along the Crete-Rhodes line.”
Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Naci Görür had stated weeks earlier that faults in the Antalya region could generate earthquakes with magnitudes of 7 or higher. “All these systems can produce earthquakes with a magnitude of 7 or more,” he explained.
