Christmas sweaters are among the most beloved garments of the festive month of December. They carry a charming history that dates back to the 19th century.
Their origins trace to Northern Europe, specifically Scandinavia, where elderly women began knitting heavy wool sweaters for their husbands, who were often fishermen. These sweaters were made with bright, vibrant colors, serving a practical purpose: to make the men more visible if they fell into the sea during fishing trips.
By the early 20th century, owning one of these sweaters became a symbol of wealth, particularly in the United States, as only the affluent could afford trips to such remote destinations. In the 1950s, during the post-war economic boom and the rise of Christmas shopping culture, these sweaters began appearing on television, worn by screen stars. Their popularity soared thanks to the “Ugly Christmas Jumper,” famously donned by Bill Cosby in The Cosby Show.
The English seem to be especially enthusiastic about these festive knits. Last year alone, approximately 12 million Christmas sweaters were sold in the UK. Even the British Royal Family has embraced the trend, with members participating in festive charity events, including a ceremonial group of King Charles’s guards who parade in festive attire on December 24.
Although often considered a “fashion faux pas” in terms of annual trends, celebrities continue to inspire creative ways to style these quirky sweaters, making them a fun and festive option during the holiday season.
