Local authorities have warned of hazardous conditions for Thanksgiving travelers attempting to return home.
In the United States, the first significant snowfall of the season has blanketed cities along Lake Erie.
Frigid weather is expected to persist into the coming week, causing disruptions in the Great Lakes region, the Plains, and the Midwest.
Some areas in New York, Ohio, and Michigan received around 60 centimeters (24 inches) of snow, while the northwest corner of Pennsylvania recorded up to 73 centimeters (29 inches).
Local authorities have issued warnings about dangerous travel conditions for those returning home after Thanksgiving.
“Travel will be extremely difficult and hazardous this weekend, especially in areas where several feet of snow can accumulate quickly,” the National Weather Service stated.
A section of Interstate 90 in Pennsylvania was closed, along with westbound lanes in western New York.
An Arctic air surge this week has brought temperatures more than 10 degrees below average in the Northern Plains, according to the Weather Service, which issued cold weather alerts for parts of North Dakota.
This cold air mass is expected to move eastward across the United States by Monday.
