The virus that has alarmed China has also spread to the United Kingdom. Cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) have doubled in the UK over the past month, as virus experts urge Chinese authorities to share critical information about the outbreak.
Recent observations in the UK indicate there are 20 cases of respiratory infections that can be attributed to HMPV, with cases increasing particularly among children under the age of 5.
This comes as Chinese hospitals report being overwhelmed with HMPV patients, primarily affecting children. Children are particularly vulnerable to HMPV as their immune systems are still developing.
Additionally, Norovirus has also been spreading in England. Five hospitals have been mobilized to operate at full capacity, with reports indicating some patients waiting up to 50 hours in queues. Over 5,000 patients were hospitalized with the virus during the Christmas and New Year period.
Last week, there was an average of 4,000 patients with viral infections in hospitals daily, nearly 3.5 times more than the previous week, including 211 in critical condition.
