The world’s population reaches over 8 billion people, increasing by 75 million in 2023

Date:

The global population grew by 75 million people in 2023, and as of the first day of 2024, it is projected to surpass 8 billion, according to data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The global population growth rate for 2023 was just under 1%. At the start of 2024, the world is expected to experience 4.3 births and 2 deaths every second, the Bureau reports.

In the United States, population growth in 2023 stood at 0.53%, about half the global rate. The U.S. population increased by 1.7 million over the year, reaching 335.8 million by the end of 2023.

If the current trend continues through the decade, it would mark the slowest population growth in U.S. history, with an increase of less than 4% between 2020 and 2030, says William Frey, a demography expert at the Brookings Institution.

The slowest decade for U.S. population growth to date was the 1930s, during the Great Depression, when the population grew by 7.3%. “Of course, growth could pick up in the years following the pandemic, but it’s unlikely the U.S. will see an increase of 7.3%,” Frey adds.

At the beginning of 2024, the U.S. is projected to see one birth every 9 seconds and one death every 9.5 seconds. However, immigration is expected to counterbalance population decline, with one immigrant added every 28.3 seconds. Combining births, deaths, and immigration, the U.S. population is predicted to grow by one person every 24.2 seconds.
