Donald Trump’s allies involved in the transition process have compiled a list of alternative candidates for Secretary of Defense in recent days. This is in case Pete Hegseth’s nomination encounters significant obstacles, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.
One of the names under consideration is Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa. Ernst is seen as both willing to accept the role and likely to secure confirmation, sources said. Recently, Ernst spent time at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, where she discussed cabinet candidates and other plans, including DOGE-related initiatives, as noted in her social media posts.
Additionally, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been floated as a potential replacement. DeSantis, a former U.S. Navy JAG officer, was included in Trump’s initial shortlist for Defense Secretary, according to a knowledgeable source.
Senator Bill Hagerty of Tennessee is another name being promoted by Trump allies. Those close to Trump have long hoped to find a significant role for Hagerty in the administration.
The push for alternative options gained momentum after concerns arose about Hegseth. These were mainly tied to his personal conduct, with allegations involving women and alcohol leading to fears that his nomination could face a “mathematical problem” similar to that of former Congressman Matt Gaetz.
A senior Trump transition official expressed doubts about Hegseth, citing his lack of transparency with the transition team and Trump himself. Allegations included past misconduct and failing to disclose important issues.
Adding to the controversy, the New York Times reported that Hegseth’s mother emailed him, urging him to seek help for his behavior towards women. Furthermore, concerns about his time at Fox News—where he reportedly had a relationship with his now-wife, who was his executive producer—have raised red flags.
The situation remains fluid, with a critical decision expected soon.
