The President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, has requested a New York judge on Monday to delay the sentencing in his criminal case related to hush money payments, in which he was found guilty last year.
Trump’s lawyers said they intend to ask the Court of Appeals to overturn last week’s decision by Judge Juan Merchan to issue the sentencing on January 10.
Attorneys Todd Blanche and Emil Boce asked Merchan to hold off on announcing the judgment against Trump until they file their appeal with the Court of Appeals. If this happens, the likelihood is that Trump’s sentencing will not be announced before his inauguration on January 20.
Merchan set Friday as the date for issuing the judgment but hinted that Trump would not face imprisonment or a fine.
Trump was found guilty in May of falsifying business records to unlawfully influence the 2016 presidential election through payments made to silence a porn actress who claimed to have had sexual relations with him.
He was charged with 34 criminal counts, including falsifying 11 invoices, 12 vouchers, and 11 checks to conceal a $130,000 payment made to Stormy Daniels to buy her silence regarding her allegations of having sexual relations with Trump in 2006.
Daniels wanted to speak publicly about the alleged affair with Trump one month before the 2016 elections, which would have harmed the presidential campaign of the Republican nominee. Trump has said her claims are false and has denied all accusations.
