The future U.S. President, Donald Trump, has voiced strong opposition to wind turbines in the North Sea and criticized the United Kingdom’s energy policies.
“The United Kingdom is making a big mistake. Open up the North Sea. Get rid of the wind turbines,” he wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
For years, the UK has increasingly relied on offshore wind energy in the North Sea. In the 1970s, the region saw extensive oil and gas extraction, primarily by the UK and Norway. However, over the past two decades, oil companies have gradually scaled back their operations due to dwindling reserves beneath the North Sea.
Oil Companies Retreating
The UK has also been investing heavily in renewable energy and raised taxes on oil producers in its waters last year. Trump’s comments appear to be a response to reports about APA, a U.S.-based oil and gas company, planning to completely exit the North Sea by 2029. According to media reports, production in the region is expected to decline by 20% in 2025 compared to 2024. Another major U.S. oil giant, Exxon, had already fully withdrawn from the area by 2024.
Trump’s Stance on Energy and Climate
Trump has long expressed skepticism about climate change and has been a vocal supporter of fossil fuels. During his first term in office, he initiated the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, which aims to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. His successor, Joe Biden, reversed that decision, rejoining the agreement. However, Trump has signaled his intention to withdraw once again if he returns to office.
