A bride and hundreds of guests who had arrived on Saturday afternoon at a church in Crete waited in vain, as the wedding ceremony was canceled due to the arrest of the 36-year-old groom for drug possession.
According to local media, the guest list, which reportedly included over 900 people, arrived at the church to attend the religious ceremony and the baptism of their child. There were 14 godparents alone, and the reception hall had been booked for 2,000 guests. However, the groom never made it to the church after being arrested during a police operation in the Heraklion region. Authorities, acting on specific information, found the groom in possession of 170 grams of cocaine, 132 rounds of ammunition in various calibers, two precision scales, and €3,550 in cash. Additionally, during the investigation, a small statue, which violated antiquities theft laws, was discovered.
The 36-year-old was brought before the Heraklion prosecutor, along with his mother, who was also arrested for attempting to dispose of the 170 grams of cocaine in an effort to protect her son and save the wedding, according to local media reports.
In his statements, the groom’s defense lawyer emphasized that his client “is psychologically devastated by everything that has happened.” He stated that the groom was in an exceptionally bad psychological state, as a minor issue had turned what should have been the happiest day of his and his family’s life into sorrow and disappointment.
“Anyone can understand how this man must feel. What happened is the greatest punishment for him, but unfortunately, his loved ones ‘pay’ for it, and he cannot forgive himself. He humbly asks for forgiveness from everyone and the hundreds of people who came to his wedding ceremony,” said the lawyer. He also stated that the quantity of cocaine found was exclusively for personal use.
