Heartburn is a burning sensation or discomfort in the chest, usually behind the sternum, often occurring after eating. This sensation happens when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, which connects the throat to the stomach. The acidic content irritates the lining of the esophagus, causing a burning feeling.
Symptoms of Heartburn

How Does Heartburn Occur?
Heartburn arises due to specific mechanisms. Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when the muscle surrounding the lower part of the esophagus is weak. This muscle opens to allow food into the stomach and should close to prevent acid from flowing back into the esophagus.
The lower esophageal sphincter (the muscle at the junction of the esophagus and stomach) helps keep stomach acid in the stomach. If this muscle weakens or relaxes at the wrong time, stomach acid can return to the esophagus, causing heartburn.
Overeating
Consuming large amounts of food can increase pressure in the stomach, potentially triggering acid reflux.
Consuming Certain Foods and Drinks
Fatty, spicy, acidic, and fried foods, along with chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated drinks, can relax the lower esophageal sphincter or increase acid production in the stomach.
